Currency
British currency is pound (£) sterling made up of 100 pence (p). Euros are not generally accepted.

Electricity
Electricity: standard voltage is 240V AC, 50Hz.

Emergency Services
In an emergency, dial 999 from any phone. This is a free number. Tell the operator if you need the Fire Brigade, Police or an Ambulance. Give the address where help is needed and your name.


Electrical Plugs
In the UK electrical plugs have 3 points.  If you have a plug with 2 points, you can buy an adapter so that you can use your plug safely.  If you try to put a 2 point plug in a 3 point socket, there is a very great danger of fire.




Fishing
You cannot fish in rivers and lakes without a license. You may also need permission if you want to fish on a private lake or part of a river.  There are rules controlling the kind of fishing that you are permitted to do in different places.  It is illegal to fish without a license.




Identity Checking Service
This is if you need a certified photocopy of an original identity document.  If you take your original document, and a photocopy of that document, some Post Offices are able to certify that the photocopy is the same as the original. Take your passport and other documents to prove your identity. You can also get documents certified by a solicitor (lawyer) which may be more expensive than the Post Office.

You can get free internet access at your local library (see Libraries for addresses, this Section).
