It's against the law for an employer, or anyone else, to discriminate against you if you are gay, lesbian, or transsexual because of your sexual orientation. You're also protected against harassment or bullying at work. Find out about your rights and what to do if you're treated unfairly because of your sexuality on the website . www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Employees/DiscriminationAtWork/DG_10026540
If you are interested in finding out about the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual situation in the UK, the charity Stonewall has an informative website www.stonewall.org.uk. Stonewall works to raise public awareness and campaign and lobby for equality and against homophobia in all levels of society.
Gay Liaison Officers
In order to protect the rights of gay and lesbian people, the police have appointed Gay Liaison Officers. No one should have to put up with being harassed, bullied, victimised, or verbally or physically abused because of their sexuality. It is important that the police are informed of homophobic hate crime, even if it is reported anonymously. If you have experienced or witnessed a homophobic incident, you can complete an on-line Incident Report Form on the website www.wsmsh.org.uk – go to the Homophobia link on the top of the page. You do not need to give your name on the report unless you choose to do so.
If you telephone the police to report a hate crime, you can ask to speak to a Gay Liaison Officer who will assist you. (See Police, this Section, for telephone numbers.)
