If you are looking for a place to live, you can go to a letting agency, an estate agency or check the local newspaper which will have advertisements of places to rent or buy. Accommodation Provided by Employer An employer cannot take more than £29.05 per week (£4.15 per day) for accommodation if your pay is below the national minimum wage. This amount is currently £4.30. Contact the National Minimum Wage helpline for the latest figure on 0845 600 0678. Contact the Citizens Advice Bureau (see Useful Contacts & Advice section) if you feel you are being charged too much. Rent, Deposit and Council Tax When you rent a place to live, most landlords will ask for a deposit plus the first month’s rent. There should be a written agreement which you and the landlord can sign, so that you know your responsibilities, and your landlord’s responsibilities. You will need to pay the rent, plus a monthly tax to the local authority which is for the use of local services. This is called a Council Tax. Sometimes the Council Tax is included within the rent. Sometimes you need to pay this separately to the Council. Ask your landlord to make this clear for you, as it is the law that you have to pay this tax. For more information see section below on Council Tax. Make sure that your landlord gives you a receipt for the rent every time you pay it. It is also important to get a receipt for the deposit, so that if you want to change your accommodation you can get your deposit back, provided you have fulfilled all the responsibilities in the written rental agreement. |
